Spanish @ Southwood
Intent
It is our intent at Southwood Primary School to provide all of our children with a high-quality education in Modern Foreign Languages (MFL), which develops their love of learning about other languages and cultures. Our current MFL taught is Spanish. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of our children’s primary education, they have acquired an understanding of both spoken and written Spanish, confidence to speak in Spanish with others and know how important other languages can be in their future.
Our MFL curriculum is designed to develop not only our children’s language skills, but also their love of learning a language.
Implementation
Our Scheme progressively develops language skills, through regularly taught lessons. All children in KS2 will have weekly 30/45 minute language lessons. Children are encouraged and supported to develop their speaking and listening skills through conversational work, singing activities and games. As their confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences
Lessons are sequenced so that prior learning is considered and opportunities for revision of language and grammatical concepts are built into lessons.
Spanish is taught via a topic approach which changes each half term. Each year group, follows differentiated learning outcomes that encourage children’s understanding and knowledge of the Spanish language to deepen and progress.
Spanish is also taught through purposeful cross curricular links, including Maths, Science, Music and Geography.

Impact
Topics are revisited each year with an added skill or challenge. This ensures that each topic is revisited regularly to embed each learning objective. The lesson structure each week also allows time to revisit the previous week’s knowledge and build upon this. Children fill in weekly ‘I can’ statements which link to the learning objective after each lesson is taught. This ensures that the children are progressing in Spanish and informs of gaps which need to be revisited. Subject leader monitor the impact of our curriculum provision through completing regular monitoring.
